Choosing between Map Views-Two map choices are available. Equal area maps are suitable for comparing spatial relationships between features, such as looking at the density or nearness of features to other features. The "unprojected" view uses a geographic projection based upon a rectangular grid. On the maps here, this means that northern objects are shown further apart than in reality. These maps should be used when examining individual features and not features in relationship to the location of other features. This view includes image services from ESRI.
About this System-The Pennsylvania Environmental website was created under an EPA contract given to the Department of Physical and Earth Sciences at Jacksonville State University (Jacksonville, Alabama) and Friends of Rural Alabama. This grant sponsored development and expansion of the American Environmental Geographic Information System. The system uses ArcGIS, an ESRI product, to provide the maps and environmental data to anyone who has internet capabilities. If you are a first time visitor, you may wish to view the tutorial. Data are presented here in an equal area projection so as to display density distributions more accurately.
