The American Environmental Geographic Information System (AEGIS) was originally conceived by Dr. Bryan Burgess of Friends of Rural Alabama (ForAla). He established working relationships with the Geography Research Laboratory in the Physical and Earth Sciences Department at Jacksonville State University, supplying them with data to initiate the database. They began working with him to expand the collection and develop additional layers.
He continued to write grants and seek funding. A number of organizations have provided support. AEGIS was developed under financial assistance from the U.S. EPA, ESRI, Norcross Wildlife Foundation, and Delorme. ForAla and Jacksonville State University continue to provide needed resources and labor.
